Empowering Sustainability: Safari Ostrich Tourist Farm with their Hybrid Solar Solution

Nestled in the heart of Oudtshoorn, Safari Ostrich Farm is not only a hub for tourism and education but also a pioneer in sustainable farming practices. Faced with the challenges of unstable electricity due to load shedding and high tariffs imposed by Eskom, the farm embarked on an innovative journey to improve operations, reduce costs, and make a positive impact on the environment.

Safari Ostrich Farm traces its roots back to 1956 when Derek Fisch and Harry Lipschitz opened it to the public. Their vision was simple yet powerful: educate and entertain guests about ostriches and farming practices. Today, this legacy continues as both families actively engage in commercial ostrich farming while maintaining the farm as a popular attraction.

The Hybrid Solar System

To address the operational challenges and enhance sustainability, our commercial team installed a cutting-edge hybrid solar system. Here are the key components:

  1. Victron MultiPlus-II Inverters:
    • Six 10-kilovolt-ampere (kVA) 48V Victron MultiPlus-II inverters form the backbone of the system. These intelligent inverters efficiently convert solar energy for use across the farm.
  2. MPPT Charge Controllers:
    • Multiple Maximum Power Point Trackers (MPPTs) optimize solar panel performance, ensuring maximum energy capture.
    • The system spans an impressive 36 meters by 30 meters, featuring IBR and corrugated Canadian solar panels with a total capacity of 85.8 kilowatt-peak (KWp).
  3. Reliable Energy Storage:
    • The 100/80 Freedom Won battery provides reliable energy storage, ensuring a consistent power supply even during cloudy days or at night.

The numbers speak volumes:

  • Annual Energy Production:
    • The revamped system produces an average of 129.4 megawatt-hours (MWh) annually. This clean energy not only powers the farm but also contributes to a greener South Africa.
  • Carbon Emission Savings:
    • By relying on solar energy, Safari Ostrich Farm saves an impressive 93.168 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This commitment to environmental stewardship sets a positive example.

Safari Ostrich Farm’s hybrid solar system not only secures the farm’s energy needs but also contributes to a resilient and sustainable future. As guests continue to learn about ostriches and farming practices, they also witness firsthand the power of renewable energy—a legacy that Derek Fisch and Harry Lipschitz would surely be proud of.
