Renewable energy is the future

A Succes story.

In the heart of Mix Settlement, Brakwater, a proactive entrepreneur named Albinos Kundishi shi recognized a pressing need faced by the residents: access to essential food items like fish and chicken. The lack of proper storage facilities and electricity posed significant challenges, especially for mothers who had to travel long distances to Windhoek just to purchase a small quantity of fish. Kundishi shi decided to take matters into his own hands and offer a solution that would transform lives.

In 2015, Kundishi shi began selling fish from his residence within the settlement. However, limited sales prompted him to think innovatively. He started selling fish from the trunk of his car, driving around the settlement after his work as a sound technician with the Ndilimani Cultural Group. Despite his efforts, the restricted selling hours remained a hurdle.

Determined to make a lasting impact, Kundishi shi established a small shop within a shipping container, aptly named Oshivelelwa Koshiwana-SK Fish Supplier. The shop remained open throughout the day, but a new challenge emerged: fish storage.

Fortuitously, a representative from Fumtech, a Windhoek-based company specializing in renewable energy systems, visited the settlement. Kundishi shi seized the opportunity and convinced the representative to install a solar energy system. Despite initial skepticism, the installation included solar panels, a set of batteries housed in a sealed enclosure, a deep freezer, and two lighting fixtures. The system began operating seamlessly, providing a reliable source of power.

The solar-powered system significantly enhanced Kundishi shi’s business. Customers could now conveniently purchase frozen foods at any time. His product range expanded to include various fish varieties such as angel fish, jacopever, maasbanker (mackerel), and John Dory. On successful days, Kundishi shi achieves sales of approximately N$1,500, while even slower days generate N$600 in revenue.

Albinos Kundishi shi’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to community welfare exemplify the power of innovation. His solar-powered fish supply solution not only addresses food accessibility but also empowers residents of Mix Settlement. As we celebrate such initiatives, let us recognize the impact of sustainable solutions in transforming lives.
